Youth Development Professionals Join Dane County UW-Extension Team

We are excited to welcome two new colleagues to Dane County UW-Extension. Both will be working in our Positive Youth Development Institute.

Lisa Curley

Lisa Curley, Dane County 4-H Program Coordinator, comes to UW-Extension with more than 20 years of leadership development experience with non-profits and a passion for youth development. She delights in helping youth and volunteers identify talents and grow confidently through experience and education. Most recently, Lisa was a Senior Member Services Specialist with the Girl Scouts of Wisconsin – Badgerland where she worked directly with more than 500 volunteers and 2000 girls. During her tenure, she experienced an increase in member retention and volunteer engagement.  She also organized a leadership development conference and facilitated the development of many training programs.

As Recruitment and Development Specialist and Membership Director with the YMCA of Dane County, Lisa developed effective recruitment, orientation, and retention processes for members, volunteers and employees. Her background in volunteer, program and membership management will benefit the Dane County 4-H clubs, volunteers  and members. Lisa knows 4-H well as she was a youth member of the Southside Hotshots 4-H Club in Milwaukee and is currently a Program Leader with the High Flyers 4-H Club in Madison. Lisa lives in Madison and enjoys cooking, gardening, camping, and listening to her family sing.

Javier Neira

Javier Neira, Community Youth Development Educator, was born in Bogota, Colombia and moved to the United States in August 2001 to Madison, Wisconsin. He is a graduate from the University of Wisconsin – Madison and earned his Bachelor’s degree in International Relations and Political Science. His passion for education started when he formed, alongside a group of friends, the group Alcance, Inc. to reach the Latino students in high schools in South Central Wisconsin to achieve a college career.

Javier began his professional career in higher education at Madison Area Technical College, where he worked in a variety of roles and projects to influence non-tradition and low income students to achieve their academic and career dreams. This passion, encouraged him to get his master’s degree in Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis at UW-Madison, to learn more about program and policy strategies to better serve underrepresented populations in higher education. After graduating, his last project was to create the Scholars of Promise program, to provide low-income students with an opportunity to have their tuition and fees covered for the first two years of college.

Javier is excited to join UW-Extension to develop youth leadership skills to foment the positive youth experiences and build community leaders. He can be reached at neira.javier@countyofdane.com or 608-224-3717
