Tomato Late Blight Information

Many home gardeners and vegetable producers have heard about local late blight infections or witnessed the demise of their own crop. At this page you will find links to several documents showing pictures and management recommendations.

Below are some highlights to remember:

1) Both potatoes and tomatoes can be infected.

2) Remember, not all diseased tomato plants are infected with late blight. White mold and Septoria are also infecting Dane County tomato plants. The Plant Disease Diagnostics Clinic at 1630 Linden Drive can do a laboratory confirmation for late blight. Horticulture staff at the Dane County Extension office may be able to provide a visual determination, depending on symptoms brought in.

3) Diseased tissue must be land filled, or burned where allowed, to break the transmission cycle.

4) Treatment will PREVENT not CURE disease. When using pesticides, including organic products, be sure to follow all labeled use and harvest restrictions.
