Claire Strader, Small Scale and Organic Produce Educator, and Heidi Johnson, Crops & Soils Educator, are counting weeds and cutting biomass samples as part of an on farm research trial looking at cover crops as living aisles under organic vegetables at Blue Moon Community Farm. After the samples, they will till 24″ planting rows into the clover cover crops and plant acorn squash and Brussels sprouts. They will compare the vegetable crop yield and weed load in the cover crop plots to clean cultivated control plots. This is the second year of the trial. This project is part of a larger effort looking at how to use cover crops to reduce tillage and provide some alternatives to black plastic mulch on organic vegetable farms.
